INQ-177 | Interactive Storytelling
Topic Description:
What happens when a story’s audience has the power to influence its direction and meaning? Traditional fiction presents a single predetermined plot, but interactive narratives give the reader or player agency within the story world and offer a range of possible routes and outcomes. In this course, students will develop their selected topics through research and imagination in order to craft immersive story experiences (pick-a-path tales, tabletop role-playing games, etc.) in which the audience actively participates. Designing interactive narratives is fun but challenging, and it requires attentiveness to all the elements of effective storytelling: voice, structure, conflict, stakes, worldbuilding, character development, imagery, tone, and atmosphere. Creators at any level of writing and art skill can discover the joy of making and sharing these unique, dynamic stories.
