INQ-300 | Challenges of Disability

Full Title: Challenges of Disability

Topic Description:

Disability is ubiquitous; can impact multiple aspects of an individual’s life; and consequently, multiple aspects of society, including employment, poverty, earnings limitations, health behaviors, and interaction with the legal system, impact individuals with disabilities. Disability is considered a medical construct, but is also a societal construct. Is disability a matter of shame, or pride? How does society act as the impediment? How does the ADA function to improve and impede daily lives? What are the limits of the ADA and other laws meant to ‘protect’ individuals with disabilities? Is additional legislation necessary for added protections and access? How do economic status, educational attainment, residence, and disability intersect? What can we do to make our social world more inclusive? Students will have the opportunity to explore these topics and then focus in on one. Student groups will also suggest potential actions or solutions to questions based on class content.
