Topic Description:
This course studies the development of philosophy within both the Republic and Empire phases of Roman history. This time period saw the development of Plato’s Academic philosophy, the rise of Stoicism, Epicureanism, Skepticism, and Christianity. As such it provides a unique vantage point to ask questions concerning the good life and good government. Through lecture, travel, and testing students will become familiar with the major themes of each of these movements. In May, 2005, the course will be offered on location in Rome, Italy.
