Topic Description:
How are public health priorities identified? How can individual-level health outcomes, presented as a snap-shot in time, catalyze widespread change in public policy, budget allocations, social services, infrastructure, and the lived experiences of individuals in a community? In this course, students will learn and apply the scientific principles of public health surveillance while managing a local health surveillance system, the Roanoke Valley Community Healthy Living Index, from start to finish. Through this course, students will engage in an authentic research experience while learning and applying skills in public health surveillance methodology, including system development, data management, data analysis and interpretation, and presenting findings to encourage public health action.
