INQ-277 | Novels and Works of Art

Crosslisted As: ARTH277

Topic Description:

Since the nineteenth century, novels have brought artists and works of visual art into the literary imaginations of their readers. In this course, we will ask: How have novelists used works of art in their texts? How are artists characterized within these books? What relationship exists between real works of art and the discussion of them in these books? The course will begin with historical examples, but focus primarily on selections of contemporary novels. In some cases, we will also study the film adaptations of novels.

Course Types Offered: On-Campus
