In this course, students will explore issues related to immigration in France, through the study of films from the new genre “cinema Beur” (Beur cinema). Made by second generation North African immigrants who have grown up in France, these movies reflect on contemporary societal problems over the last two decades. This course will provide students with a comprehensive background of the French decolonization process in North Africa, and contemporary postcolonial issues linked to integration, assimilation, multiculturalism, Diaspora, gender and Muslim traditions. Prerequisite: French 102 or permission of the instructor
