Topic Description:
This is a course about the Holocaust. It asks students to examine and analyze Holocaust memorialization and to trace Jewish identity and memory in post-Holocaust Germany and Poland. We will examine Holocaust memory as a representation of history. This is a travel course with planned visits to Leipzig, Berlin, and Krakow where we will visit Jewish museums and synagogues, and meet with leaders of the current Jewish communities. We will explore the locales of the Holocaust, including Jewish quarters, former synagogues, and other Jewish properties destroyed during the 1938 Reichskristallnacht, as well as the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
