Whether it be portrayed in murder mystery novels by Agatha Christie or recent television shows like Forensic Files and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, forensic science captivates the general public. Forensic chemistry is a field wherein chemical concepts and analytical techniques are used to assist law enforcement during criminal investigations. Through readings, student-led classroom discussions, and hands-on laboratory experiments with modern chemical instrumentation, students in this course will apply scientific skills and chemical principles to various topics such as the processing of a crime scene, analysis of illicit drugs and poisons, arson analysis, blood typing, DNA sequencing, fingerprinting, and more. Students will also present the results of their own analyses performed during the intensive learning session as evidence in a mock trial of a mysterious whodunit
