INQ-277 | Degenerate Art: a travel course to Germany and Austria

Topic Description:

This course focuses on Vienna, Munich, and Berlin, tracing two late-nineteenth to early-twentieth century threads: the Freudian revolution in art and music and the rise to power of its enemies, the fascists of the Third Reich. Students study Freud’s theory of Eros and Thanatos, the rise of Hitler and the National Socialist Party, and the Nazi-sponsored Entartete Kunst (“Degenerate Art”) exhibit of 1937, a landmark event in the unfolding Holocaust. On-site travel will also consider how cultural attitudes towards this art have changed, and how these changes are manifest in the museums of these cities.
