Full Title: The Hispanic Caribbean: Nationhood, Race, Gender and Culture
Topic Description:
What is nationhood in the Hispanic Caribbean? Do national discourses integrate or separate people due to their race, gender, sexuality, and economic level? In this introductory course, students will read from selected readings (poetry and prose) and watch films to explore and analyze the geographical, social and historical context of the Hispanic Caribbean and the racial implications that lead to the formation of a national identity. Students will explore a variety of topics (sexuality, race, gender identity, nationalism and exile) and analyze their functions to help us better understand the complexities of national, social and individual identities. Readings will depict literary periods from the 1900s to the present.
