INQ-271 | The Biblical Film
Full Title: The Biblical Film
Topic Description:
How has the Bible been portrayed on screen? How do these adaptations reflect the cultural contexts from which they arise? How have these films sought to make a text almost two millennia old relevant for today’s audiences? And is fidelity to biblical text essential to our assessment of a biblical film? In this course we will explore how the Bible has been depicted on the silver screen, from the earliest films of the silent era to today. A close reading of biblical texts in combination with the films inspired by them will aid our appreciation and enlighten our reading of both the original texts and the films. Films discussed will be primarily of Anglo-American origin, but other films include those from Italy, France, Egypt, South America, and Mali.
