INQ-271 | Black Spaces in America

Full Title: Black Spaces in America

Topic Description:

In this course we will explore the history of Black spaces in America, from the mid-18th century through the mid-20th century. Significant questions include: What debates over issues of space and community preoccupied Black Americans in different time periods? How were communities of African Americans connected to the world beyond America’s borders? What limits have been placed on Black Americans in their own spaces due to white supremacy, and what happened when they attempted to move beyond those limits? What approaches were used to grow and foster Black communities? How and in what ways have Black spaces, both physical and conceptual, been co-opted or appropriated historically? Since this is an INQ course, this class will have an additional purpose: to introduce students to historical methodology, that is, how historians process information, analyze sources, and create new knowledge.
