INQ-270 | Slavery in the Ancient World

Full Title: Slavery in the Ancient World: Egypt and the Middle East

Topic Description:

Slavery was not unique to the American South – or, indeed, to the Americas or to the modern world. When viewed globally, we see that slavery is not a monolithic institution. Though always defined by a power imbalance between the owner and the enslaved, the scale of slavery, the relationship between master and enslaved, the rights of the enslaved person, and the role of slavery to social institutions drastically differs across time and space. This course will focus on understanding slavery in the ancient world, especially ancient Egypt and the ancient Middle East, to understand the different types of data. By studying ancient slavery, we will explore how the history of this institution is both diverse, global, and pan historic.
