Full Title: Digital Media: Manipulating for Good and Bad

Topic Description:

Digital pictures, digital music, web pages, and other information stored in a computer are all just bits – 0s and 1s – as far as the computer is concerned. The computer's ability to process these bits has led to informative graphics, mind boggling animations, and creative music on the positive side as well as, on the negative side, doctored photos and sounds designed to mislead. In this course students will learn how the information we are surrounded by – pictures, sounds, words, numbers – is represented in bits and how to write computer programs (in the programming language Python) that process the bits. Emphasis will be on processing pictures and sound. Students will examine the social and ethical consequences of this easy manipulation of bits
