INQ-177 | Our Mineral World

Topic Description:

What is the difference between a rock and a mineral? Why are sapphires blue and rubies red? What minerals are common in our local region? This course will examine the introductory ideas necessary to understand the field of mineralogy. We will be applying concepts of chemistry, geometry, and geology. Typical topics include mineral identification, crystal growth, and industrial applications. We will also be exploring the mineral formations in the region with day trips to local caverns and hiking excursions. Fees are to cover the cost of these fieldtrips as well as an overnight stay in DC for a visit to the Smithsonian.
