Full Title: Creative Community Development through Arts & Culture

Topic Description:

In what ways do local arts and culture foster social cohesion, strengthen community attachments, give voice to the voiceless? What is the impact of “creative placemaking” on the physical, political, spiritual, and social health of a community? What support does the not-for-profit arts-and-culture sector need in order to contribute effectively to this process? (Why should we care about these arts-related non-profits? Does it matter if they disappear?) Across our country, community leaders are improving the quality of life by partnering with arts-based organizations, cultural institutions, and independent citizen-artists to promote stewardship of place, generate cultural tourism, stimulate civic engagement—among many other goals. Working as “cross-sector” collaborators, teams identify a real-world need (or opportunity) for creative community development, and propose a project that benefits specific groups, neighborhoods, or organizations chosen by the team. As they develop their projects, team members harness their leadership strengths to collaborate on building stronger and healthier communities.
