HNRS-271 | City as a Work of Art-Global

Full Title: The City as a Work of Art: Paris & Beijing

Topic Description:

Cities play a crucial role in civilization, providing our sense of place and identity, constructing and reflecting our sense of who we are as civic beings. How do they accomplish this materially and in the imagination? In other words, how do cities as objects create and manifest cultural and sociological meaning? And what benefit is to be gained from looking at cities as works of art? This course will study cities as objects and ideas, using Paris and Beijing as case studies. Our focus will be primarily on architecture and urban development, but will also look into representations of the city in the visual arts and literary texts.
