INQ-277 | Into the Realm of Myth: Mycenaeans and Minoans
Crosslisted As: HIST277
Topic Description:
Around the shores of the Aegean Sea Europe’s first civilizations arose: the Minoans of Crete and the Mycenaeans of mainland Greece. We know them through archaeology, but the Ancient Greeks knew them through myths: the stories of the Minotaur, the Cyclops, the Trojan War, of the generation of heroes belonged to a bygone world about which the Ancient Greeks knew little else. We will explore the remains and artifacts of these early cultures, consider the forces that brought them into being, how a century and a half of archaeological discovery has revealed them to the modern world, and why and how the Ancient Greeks imagined these places and the ancestors who inhabited them
